BUSINESS AND REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS

ATIBA’s business analysts function as strategists, and are well versed in analyzing the strategic profile of an organization and advising senior management on suitable policies and recommended organizational changes. They are business architects, who are competent in introducing change to solve business problems and suggesting ways to redefine or improve business processes (BPR, BPI). They are systems analysts, who are able to understand, advise, and define the requirements for IT systems to meet business needs.

Business analysis helps an organization improve its effectiveness and customer service by evaluating and redesigning end-to-end functions and activities that create value and help organizations achieve strategic goals through internal changes to organizational capabilities, including changes to policies, processes and information systems.

Business analysis is generally broken down into six primary knowledge areas:

  • Enterprise analysis, which focuses on understanding the needs of the business as a whole, its strategic direction, and identifying initiatives that will allow a business to meet their strategic goals.

  • Requirements planning and management involves planning the requirements development process, determining which requirements are of the highest priority for implementation, and managing change.

  • Requirements elicitation describes the techniques used to collect requirements information from stakeholders, and frequently includes workshops, focus groups and interviews.

  • Requirements analysis is critical to the success of a project, and describes how to develop and specify requirements in enough detail to allow them to be successfully implemented by a project team. Accurately documenting 'current state' and 'future state' requirements are critical to the success of any initiative. Requirements should be measurable, testable, related to identified business needs, and defined to a level of detail sufficient for system design.

  • Requirements communication, are the techniques used to ensure that stakeholders have a shared understanding of the requirements and how they will be implemented. Communication techniques include the development of use cases and system prototyping, both of which assist in presenting requirements to stakeholders in a manner that is clearly understood.

  • Solution assessment and validation, describes how the business analyst will verify the adequateness of the proposed solution, how to support the implementation of a solution, and how to assess possible shortcomings (GAP’s) in the solution being implemented.
